SIP Trunking

Who says there are summer doldrums? The SIP Trunking and Enterprise Voice community would certainly disagree. Starting with the items of interest from the end of this week and working backwards, there is a lot to review and think about.

TMCnet Contributor Madhubanti Rudra featured Aastra’s (News - Alert) announcement that its SIP-DECT mobility solution and portfolio of SIP phones are interoperable with Network Equipment Technologies’ (News - Alert) (NET) SmartSIP 2.0 for Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync Server 2010. Giving users full access to presence information for collaboration and Lync’s unified communications capabilities using SIP-DECT, it  provides an energy efficient and flexible solution for high-mobility environments where DECT-based phones, using their own dedicated spectrum, do not put a strain on WiFi (News - Alert) networks.

The Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference was the site for two partnership announcements for cloud-based communications provider IntelePeer Inc. TMCnet Contributor Rahul Arora detailed the extension of IntelePeer’s partnership with Enabling Technologies, a Microsoft (News - Alert) UC Partner of the Year. This will allow IntelePeer to serve as the exclusive SIP trunking service provider for Microsoft Lync Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) deployments. And, as highlighted by TMCnet Contributor Madhubanti Rudra, in a press conference at the event, IntelePeer announced that Microsoft (News - Alert) National Systems Integrator Catapult Systems is the latest to join the IntelePeer Partner Program which is designed to allow UC solution providers add SIP trunking to their UC solutions.

Certification and integration news was also prominent this week as highlighted in TMCnet Contributor Deepika Mala’s feature on Integra Telecom earning Digium Switchvox (News - Alert) (News - Alert) SIP Trunking Interoperability Certification. And, TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan’s story on Level 3 providing SIP Trunking with a Nomadic E-911 solution for Microsoft Lync highlights a challenge that has been facing enterprise VoIP since its earliest days, identification of the physical location of roaming users in need of E-911.

John Cooper, Director of Sales, IceWarp’s (News - Alert) featured piece on SIP as an alternative to Skype, especially given the pending acquisition of Skype by Microsoft, is a must read. He not only points out the problems associated with Skype and the “closed” systems of various vendors, but promotes SIP-based VoIP systems as providing enterprises “better flexibility than Skype and, at the same time, helping to further mitigate their risks.” SIP native supports allow delivery of affordable and encrypted voice and video conferencing with other tools like email, IM, and collaboration.

Enterprise VoIP Feature Articles

The explosive growth of VoIP and the associated penetration of enterprise accounts with softphones topped the featured Enteprise VoIP news this week. As TMCnet Contributor Carolyn J Dawson’s feature story about Counterpath details, the company is addressing the need by service providers and enterprise IT departments to decrease the costs of provisioning and managing softphones with announcement of the availability of a Client Configuration Server (CCS) and the granting of U.S. Patent, #7,958,276.

Siemens (News - Alert) Enterprise Communications weighed in this week on providing inexpensive SIP phones for enterprises with the announcement of availability of the OpenStage 5. TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan story discusses how the OpenStage 5 despite its low cost includes enterprise security and AudioPresence HD, for superior high definition voice quality.

And, not to be outdone Ms. Rajani Baburajan also had an interesting feature about Phoenix-based COMVOICE’s introduction of what it claims is the first desk phone powered by Google's Android operating system.

Other items of interest this week included:

  • Australian broadband service provider Internode announcing revised prices and data quotas across its range of ADSL2+ plans.
  • RADCOM’s $1.5 M expansion project for its OmniQ solution.
  • SynergyPlus’s offer to explain to SMBs the virtues of business VoIP systems and how they can help the companies maintain data security.
  • My Social Income’s creation of a “'Value Network' with Aguilar to offer Aguilar’s more than 80,000 mainly Hispanic customers the benefits of the VoIP network.

Security Feature Articles

TMCnet Contributor Ashok Bindra described the findings of a recent Nielsen Company research report that the smartphone craze spreading throughout Asia is raising concerns about mobile security. And, TMCnet Contributor Calvin Azuri details how leading network security provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions in Asia, Fortinet (News - Alert). has partnered with Griffith University (with five campuses in Australia and a student population of 50,000) to deploy its multi-threat appliances to improve the school’s antivirus protection and intrusion prevention capabilities.

Finally, in a true sign of the times given the current phone hacking scandal in the UK, read TMCnet Contributor Beecher Tuttle’s feature, “Hackers Expose Security Loophole in Vodafone's Network Using Off-the-Shelf Consumer Hardware.” It concerns a group of hacktivists exposing a major security flaw that can allow basically anyone to gain full control of select Vodafone UK subscribers' cellular phones.
