The interesting thing about this community is that sometimes the news is dominated by features specifically on trunking, sometimes it is more about the phones, services and security, and/or about the business of the SIP business — deals, partnerships, pricing programs, channels and customer wins. This week there was a little of all of the above.

First, in case you missed it, TMCnet Contributing Editor Susan Campbell’s had a nice recap of our July 20th webinar in conjunction with PATTON, “SIP Trunking: Three Key Strategies for Implementation,” now available for download.

The week ended on an interesting note. With many in the blogosphere wondering aloud about the future of wired desktop phones in enterprises, as reported by TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan, Panasonic announced a new line of desktop SIP Phones for SMB market, augmenting its current series of cordless SIP models in the U.S. market. The company also announced market research firm T3iGroup had ranked it the #1 SMB phone supplier in North America for 2010.

Enterprise VoIP Feature Articles

TMCnet Contributor Anshu Shrivastava highlighted W & D Industries new twist on VoIP phone sales. The Fremont, California based company launched www.whatbusinessphone.com for SMBs looking to find the ing the right phone system for their business needs. Discounts and providing SMB users were also the subject of TMCnet Contributor Anuradha Shukla’s feature on TelcoDepot.com’s discounts for Non-Profit Organizations.

TMCnet CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) spoke with Virtual PBX COO Greg Brashier. Aas TMCnet Contributor Beecher Tuttle reported on the discussion, Brashier opened with the comment that, “The largest changes in our market segment have been the increasing recognition and acceptance of virtual, “cloud based” phone systems as a more cost-effective replacement for traditional PBX hardware and the use of VoIP in place of traditional analog telephony.” It got even better from there.

We also featured this week:

  • Contributing Editor, Doug Mohney’s musings about the VoIP services being dead.
  • IP5280 Communications rated as “Best Company to Work for in Colorado” by ColoradoBiz Magazine.
  • Jazinga's (News - Alert) Unity 2000 IP PBX integration with MegaPath's (News - Alert) SIP Trunking Service

Security Feature Articles

I wrote about security last week in looking at what was then the upcoming Black Hat security conference held in Las Vegas this week. The news coming out of the event was both enlightening and grim in a week dominated by MacAfee’s comments on “Operation Shady RAT” as a possible cyber Pearl Harbor. Features on our site also highlighted the growing threats and solutions being offered:

  • TMCnet Contributor Rajani Baburajan detailed Check Point’s 61000 Security System which offers scalable performance for data centers, telecom providers and cloud services.
  • Lookout Mobile Security as found that Android (News - Alert) users are two and a half times more likely to encounter malware on their mobile device than they were only six months ago.
  • Endace’s new NetFlow Generator 2.0 was the subject of TMCnet Contributor Nathesh’s feature on the enhanced performance and accuracy of the system for monitoring network traffic for planning, security and analysis.
  • Lance Whitney contributed the results of a SailPoint survey that pointed out that a substantial number of employees admit to potentially "abusing" private data from their employer.
