Ingate Aims to Help Service Providers Monetize their Networks Via Internet+

By Paula Bernier Executive Editor, TMC

It’s well understood that service providers like the telcos need to move away from their flat-rate and all-you-can eat business models and introduce more premium-level connectivity so they can both deliver high levels of service to customers and continue to invest in their own networks.

To enable all of the above, Ingate Systems is pushing what it calls Internet+, which is a model for how unified communications can be delivered over the Internet by service providers to accomplish what is not accomplished easily with their current overlay of softswitches and other gear. Such networks as they currently exist have some shortcomings when it comes to delivering particular traffic types, like fax and video, notes Steven Johnson, president of Ingate Systems.

To address that and allow service providers to deliver premium services, Ingate suggest that service providers can deploy its E-SBCs at customer premises to assign DiffServ values to packets, route those packets based on the quality they require, and provide the service providers with billing reports showing what amount of what kind of traffic each customer used.

A brief from Ingate and Intertex that Johnson provided to TMCnet says that Internet+ extends the Internet a bit, applies Internet thinking, and provides a standard real-time interface for users and servers. It goes on to say: “The bandwidth and network elements already existing and the additions needed only cost a fraction of what is spent on POTS replication over IP today. In the proposed Internet+ model, network service providers are again given a way to monetize good offerings to users, getting revenue by providing quality bandwidth (instead of stopping VoIP over wireless and similar).”

Ingate is talking about the new Internet+ model at its ITEXPO East 2012-co-located SIP Trunking-Unified Communications seminars this week. The concept will also be the subject of a Birds of Feather meeting on Friday here in Miami.
