TMCnet SIP Trunking Week in Review

By Jacqueline Lee Contributing Writer

This week in SIP trunking saw a number of new product releases. Comwave released its ePhone app for Android, adding to its portfolio of mobile VoIP solutions already available for BlackBerry Playbook, PC and Mac. The app costs $30 annually after the trial period. Its biggest advantage over the competition is that it allows free calls to recipients who use other mobile VoIP apps like Skype. Comwave plans to release a version of ePhone for iOS in the coming weeks.

Also this week, Sprint expanded its Biz 360 line to include some new accessories as well as some new embedded devices. Sprint’s new Square Card reader, when plugged into an iOS or Android device, accepts mobile payments for small business owners. The FleetSafer Mobile app allows drivers on-the-go to utilize their tablets and smartphones legally and hands-free, while providing companies with information about safe driving and policy enforcement.

Additionally, Sprint added the Biz 360 line to include the Lenovo HD IdeaPad, the ZTE Optik and the HTC EVO 4G LTE handset. Sprint also introduced its first mobile broadband hotspot device, the Sierra Wireless 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot.

GL Communications announced the availability of Media Gateway, a VoIP Network Testing Solution, along with its Digital Central Office Switch Simulator. Also, Avaya released a new hosted and managed services solution for government agencies called Government Outsourcing Solutions (GovOS). Based on SIP architecture, the solution will provide centrally managed solutions for individual users while meeting the security and certification needs of the Federal government.

In addition to releasing new products, several companies also formed new partnerships. Optimum Voice by Cablevision announced that its SIP trunking is now interoperable with Toshiba’s Business VoIP Telephone Systems. Also, ThinkGrid became a reseller for IntelePeer’s CoreCloud SIP trunking service, which will enable businesses to cut their time-to-deployment for applications like Microsoft Lync.

In the world of security, Chinese telecom reseller BOCO began offering WISeKey’s WISeID solution, which helps users to keep personal and proprietary information secure. The partners will also be developing a technology Center of Excellence, and WISeKey will help BOCO to establish an IT security practice on the Chinese mainland.
