SIP Trunking Week in Review

It's been another big week in session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking, and with the week now coming to a close and the weekend about to kick up in earnest, it's worth taking a look back at the week that was and checking out some of the biggest events of the week. So settle in, and let's do just that with our Week in Review coverage!

First, VoIP.co.uk came out with a set of new security features designed to keep voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service more secure and safer to use, a huge development for the growing numbers of businesses using VoIP. Among other things, VoIP.co.uk is offering what's called Troll Fraud Detection, a system that sets off an alarm any time there's irregular activity in the connection. This, in turn, can allow technicians to monitor the connections and take the relevant steps to prevent future activity or just protect against current incursion.

Next came news from Voice Carrier (News - Alert), whose IntelliSIP business VoIP phone service has achieved interoperability certification with Toshiba's (News - Alert) line of IPedge IP business communication systems. Thanks to this certification, Voice Carrier's phone service lineup can be found at authorized Toshiba dealer locations throughout the United States. With IntelliSIP looking to reduce costs on voice service and the interoperability letting users keep current IPedge hardware, the end result is a wider market for Voice Carrier and more to offer for Toshiba.

As is so often the case in life, few things are done without a level of careful planning. SIP trunking is no different, and though it offers several critical advantages for those using it, getting it fully involved in current operations needs foresight. Making sure SIP trunking can work with as many existing systems as possible makes sure few things need to be replaced or brought in new, and pre-planning ahead of an SIP trunking launch allows for not only easy operation, but also the noting of new opportunities like the use of local number services.

Then, we got a look at Waterfall Security Solutions' recent partnership with OPSWAT. The combination of these two companies allowed Waterfall to bring in its line of Unidirectional Security Gateways, as well as its line of data diodes, to match up with OPSWAT's Metascan line of multiscanning solutions to deliver a powerful security solution to protect infrastructure systems—like nuclear power plants--from outside attack. The partnership allows the Unidirectional Security Gateways to receive antivirus signatures from Metascan servers.

Finally, the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) brought a very big award Telappliant's way, as the company walked away with the ISPA's award for Best Internet Telephony (News - Alert) Provider. With fully 300 industry members, elected officials, and others on hand, the company beat out a wide pool of competitors in what was described as “a very tight contest.” The ISPA ultimately gave the nod to Telappliant thanks to its overall network resilience and its level of internal transparency.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, and it was a week that brought with it plenty of news. Our global online community relentlessly hunted down loose news and brought it all back here for easy access. So be sure to come back next week for all the latest news in the SIP trunking field, and of course, every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
