Individual PCs Aren't Always Available: Have You Considered an Upgrade to the Desktop Phone?

Staying connected is critical if you hope to be successful in the business world. The challenge for some organizations, however, is enabling all employees to stay connected if they aren’t assigned a PC for individual use. While this may seem like an antiquated approach to doing business in 2014, it’s actually quite common in medical or education environments where the practice doesn’t support current process.

Still, even if the individual PC allocation is not part of the strategy due to job role or the availability of resources, the individual still has to stay connected and “in the know”. The desktop phone is one of the ways this can happen, giving users access to the tools they need and enabling them to stay connected over Ethernet.

Today’s desktop phones resemble the traditional phone in little more than concept. The phone can still make calls, but the supported applications and additional features are what set it apart from the traditional approach. Why does this matter? Think of the typical medical environment where the nursing staff must make rounds to all patients on a particular floor. Chances are the entire rotation of nurses uses the same PCs to access information on patients, and they do not have dedicated machines.

A dedicated phone, however, can assure the necessary access to the capabilities necessary to still stay connected and productive when needed. Calls still have to be made and corporate communication still has to exist. Why not perform these tasks through a dedicated desktop phone that can be assigned to specific individuals?

Taking the current system and updating it to meet the needs of today’s employee and processes is not necessarily the right answer. The process can be costly and time-consuming, not to mention the lack of capabilities if the system wasn’t designed to support next generation technology. Instead, it may be time to consider a new phone system that supports this type of work environment, integrates nicely into the current network and supports the needed applications to keep things running smoothly.

This is one concept snom is trying to promote with its snom 715. To talk more about this innovation and why it makes sense for a number of industries, the company was on-hand at the recent ITEXPO event. snom’s Tommy Lee spoke with TMC’s Erik Linask (News - Alert), talking about the opportunities afforded with this desktop phone and what you should expect to see from snom in the market.
