Webroot looks to Thwart Cybercriminals with Next-Generation Protection

You can catch criminals if they leave a trail; today's cybercriminals are smart and use many techniques not only to hide their activities but their identities as well. Webroot, known for its abilities in real-time threat detection is out to outsmart them with its BrightCloud IP Reputation Service.

Webroot has enhanced the BrightCloud IP Reputation Service to leverage its world class mobile app reputation database of over 11 million mobile applications.

The BrightCloud IP Reputation Service helps network and security vendors strengthen customers' defenses by having a continuously updated feed of over 12 million malicious IP addresses. Since every packet on the Internet has a source IP address and a destination IP address, disabling communication (inbound and outbound) from malicious IPs would apparently cut the cybercriminals off; this is what the BrightCloud IP Reputation Service does. In fact, the service delivers dynamic IP data almost every five minutes to network devices.

It thus becomes easier to identify new and existing IP threats in a shorter time. By gaining greater visibility into the different kinds of threats, enterprises will be better positioned to protect networks.

This real-time threat intelligence service, to be offered as part of the HP Enterprise Security Products portfolio, is expected to help enterprise customers identifiy malicious IPs in network traffic introduced by corporate and employee-owned BYOD mobile devices.

"Teaming up with an industry leader like HP demonstrates the value of our threat intelligence services to greatly improve efficacy and proactively identify threats," said Scott Merkle, vice president of enterprise and OEM sales at Webroot.

"By adding mobile threat IPs to our already industry leading IP reputation services, network security providers like HP can further enhance the detection of threats introduced by BYOD and the multitude of mobile devices connected to the enterprise network."

Although this is another step forward in threat detection, it will not be the last. With cybercriminals looking for newer ways to avoid detection, Webroot could have its hands full just keeping pace with them.
