SIP Trunking Week in Review: Infonetics, IPitomy, Epygi Technologies

It’s the end of another week, and time to take a look at some of the top SIP Trunking stories we’ve been following this week.

The research firm Infonetics is expecting large growth in the adoption of SIP trunking technology. Infonetics (News - Alert) expects the market to reach $4.4 billion in 2014 alone and to reach $8 billion by 2018. Most of this growth will come from North America. Businesses won’t deploy SIP all at once, but upgrade one site at a time.

IPitomy (News - Alert), a business telecommunications provider, announced that it was acquiring the SIP trunking division of Goodwin Global Communications (GGC).

“This transaction solidifies IPitomy’s growing leadership in the VoIP Business Telecommunications market by creating a single entity for sales, support and development of VoIP hardware, software and services,” said ,” said IPitomy CEO Nick Branica (News - Alert).

While a lot of people have given up their land lines for cellphones, a report by TeleGeography claims that fixed wireline subscriptions aren’t dropping as fast as people thought. While traditional PSTN subscriptions drop at a rapid pace, when VoIP subscriptions are factored in, the voice market remains competitive, only declining slightly. A decline is still a decline: the total voice market peaked in 2008, and has been declining at a rate of 1.3 percent each year ever since.

Epygi Technologies (News - Alert) unveiled its new line of VoIP products this week. The new lineup of QX products includes three IP PBXes and four gateways. The products are smaller and have metal enclosures to better fit into data centers.

Malicious network users are always a problem, even for SIP trunking. The security firm Webroot is offering what it calls “next-generation” protection against cybercriminals with its BrightCloud IP Reputation service. BrightCloud maintains a list of over 12 million known malicious IP addresses and blocks access to or from these addresses. It’s going to be offered as part of HP’s Enterprise Security Products portfolio.
