GL Communications (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of monitoring and analysis equipment for TDM, Wireless, IP and VoIP networks, recently launched enhancements to its SIGTRAN Protocol Test Suite of SIGTRAN protocol analysis and simulation tools. This product suite includes the SIGTRAN Protocol Analyzer and Protocol Decoder, MAPS SS7 Emulator, MAPS SIGTRAN Emulator, MAPS IDSN SIGTRAN Protocol Emulator and MAPS BICC over IP Emulator.

GL’s SIGTRAN protocol decoder software is a robust VoIP testing tool, granting the ability to analyze SS7 and ISDN signaling messages over IP in real time. The software can also perform call trace, capture and filtering of these messages. The Protocol Analyzer supports a wide range of protocols, including SCTP, M2UA, M3UA, M2PA, SUA, IUA, BICC, INAP, CAMEL, ICMP, MAP, TUP, TCAP and SCCP.

SIGTRAN protocols are an extension of the SS7 family of protocols, with the main difference being SIGTRAN protocols are carried over IP. SS7 TDM layers are translated into the SIGTRAN IP format using a Signaling Gateway (News - Alert) (SG). SIGTRAN protocols support the same application and call management functions found with SS7 with two additional protocol layers above Internet Protocol (IP: Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) and M3UA MTP3 User Adaptation Layer.

GL’s Message Automation & Protocol Simulation (MAPS) protocol test simulation platform serves as the core of the company’s emulation products.

The MAPS SS7 Emulator and SIGTRAN (SS7 over IP) Emulator enable SSP simulation over TDM and SS7 simulation over IP networks, respectively, and can simulate a Signaling Gateway and Softswitch ISUP signaling specification on par with ITU-T and ANSI specifications. The application supports network element testing, error tracking, regression testing, load testing/call generation and heavy ISUP traffic simulation. This functionality covers the ITU and ANSI variant of SS7 implementing M3UA and ISUP protocols.

The MAPS IDSN SIGTRAN Protocol Emulator is used for scripted SIGTRAN ISDN over IP emulation, and can simulate a complete ISDN connection SG to MGC. It is used for testing ISDN protocol messages over IP and can perform a variety of other testing, troubleshooting and maintenance tasks for devices and networks implementing PRI ISDN.

The MAPS BICC over IP Emulator can be used to emulate all the BICC interfaces over TDM as well as IP, also known as scripted bearer independent call control protocol emulation over IP. This tool specifically simulates BICC call control signaling between MSC (News - Alert) and GMSC server nodes, with support for additional features such as error tracking, regression testing, conformance testing, load testing and call generation.

GL’s test platforms provide visualization, capture and storage features while maintaining portability and remote operability. Its testing solutions are widely used throughout the telecommunications industry.
