Vodafone Partners with Secusmart to Develop Advanced Call Encryption App

Secusmart, a recently-acquired subsidiary of Blackberry Limited specializing in mobile device security solutions, has entered into a collaboration with Vodafone Germany to develop the new Vodafone Secure Call application. Vodafone is a global provider of mobile telecommunications services.

Vodafone Secure Call is a mobile app built on VoIP technology that enables end-to-end encryption of mobile phone calls using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit encryption. According to the calculations of Mohit Arora, a Sr. Systems Engineer and Security Architect at Freescale Semiconductor writing for the EE Times, this encryption technology would take a supercomputer “one billion billion years” to crack using a brute force attack which, for comparison, is much longer than the universe’s age of approximately 13.75 billion years. An additional security enhancement ensures the encryption keys generated on the device are temporary and deleted immediately once the call ends.

“Our Vodafone Secure Call app enables companies of all sizes to make highly secure telephone calls,” said Philip Lacor, Chief Customer Officer Enterprise at Vodafone Germany. “It provides employees with a particularly effective way of protecting themselves against electronic eavesdropping. The solution combines maximum security with ease of use. The encryption app is an important addition to Vodafone’s range of security solutions and allows companies to protect their intellectual property.”

The app can be used on any network—EDGE, UMTS and LTE as well as Wi-Fi—with any smartphone running Android 4.3 and higher or iOS 7 and higher. Available to all enterprise customers whether they are a small business or big corporation, the app is compatible with phones distributed by any service provider around the world.

Despite the fact it uses such robust security technology, the app has minimal impact on voice quality, which is strong even when used at low bandwidth. Furthermore, the service’s infrastructure is hosted at a high-security data center in Germany to ensure the privacy of users’ information.

The Vodafone Secure Call app is available now to enterprise customers under pay-by-usage billing terms.
