Not every business out there has embraced session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking as a way to improve communications and, potentially, save money at the same time. But for those businesses who would like to, but are unsure about how to go about it, Fibernetics' business services division NEWT may have the answer in the form of NEWT One.

NEWT One offers a readily-available way for businesses to make the jump to SIP trunking, allowing businesses to either replace a currently operating SIP trunk service, or take a legacy phone system and bring it up to speed as part of a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) system. NEWT One is actually able to make a connection to Fibernetics' competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) service, which in turn offers not only access to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) but also to other services that can offer value for businesses from there.

For those concerned about bandwidth—and that's a larger percentage of operations than some might think—NEWT One is specifically designed to be efficient about bandwidth, able to carry out fully 24 active voice calls at the same time with less than 700Kbps of access. This means that, even with slow access speeds, businesses can run a fairly substantial call center operation. But particularly noteworthy here is that the NEWT One reportedly also comes with free Canada-wide calling where the On-net calling capability is available. On-net calling, meanwhile, covers about 80 percent of the population of Canada, as well as most major cities and surrounding areas in the country.

NEWT Carrier Services' vice president of sales, Mike Klitch, offered up some comment on the release, saying “NEWT One Business SIP Trunking voice access solution solves the challenges the market faces when implementing or preparing for IP telephony. The technology, design and functionality tied into the Fibernetics CLEC network will offer ease to implement on IP phone system delivering quality voice calls and added functionality while reducing overall communication costs.”

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much evidence of this expanding beyond Canada, but for Canadian businesses, this might be just the thing. SIP trunking and VoIP calling have been shown on more than one occasion to offer terrific communications options, including some options that local phone service may not be able to match. When the phone service can offer the options of SIP trunking or VoIP service, it often does so at significantly higher prices. That doesn't even factor in the differences between long-distance calling charges. Both of these together makes it clear: SIP trunking and VoIP calling have great potential benefits for users, but getting these systems in place can be a hassle. That's why NEWT One's service has such a great potential for success here.

As more companies look to get in on SIP trunking and similar services, services like NEWT One will likely see a greater demand. Only time will tell if NEWT One is the weapon of choice here, or if other competitors get a bigger slice of the pie, but it's clear that the market is ready, and the time to get in is now.
