Technical Advancements and Growing Subscriber Base Will Triple the Global VoIP Services Market

Voice over IP (VoIP) has matured enough so that it is a reliable replacement for landlines and in-house PBX (News - Alert) systems. Today, VoIP offers businesses of any size more flexibility and functionality while at the same time offering cost savings. Today we live in a world where unification is the key factor. When it comes to communications, a unified communications platform ties everything you need into a package that is easy to use, easy to maintain and extremely reliable.


As VoIP continues to mature and evolve, the global VoIP services market will also grow. In fact, according to Future Market Insights (FMI) over the course of the next five years we can expect to see this market triple in size. An analysis conducted by FMI found that in 2012, the corporate consumer segment was just fewer than 100 billion subscribers, which represented revenue totally about $43.3 billion. The forecast is that subscriber count will reach almost 205 billion by 2020 causing revenue to increase to around $86.2 billion.

The report is described as being a compilation of first-hand information, qualitative and quantitative assessment by industry analysts, inputs from industry experts and industry participants. The report is designed to provide in-depth analysis of parent market trends, macro-economic indicators and governing factors along with market attractiveness as per segments. 

FMI’s analysis breaks down the numbers as follows;

  • Computer to computer segment of the VoIP services market will increase from $20.7 billion to $24.8 billion, subscribers will rise from 57.4 million to 72.2 million
  • Phone (News - Alert) to phone segment will increase from $15.88 billion to $27.35 billion, subscribers will rise from 35.9 million to 116.5 million
  • Computer to phone segment will increase from $27.35 billion to $56.56 billion, subscribers will rise from 58.3 million to 128.3 million

As the deployment of LTE (News - Alert) networks continue to roll out in both developed and emerging markets, we are seeing that more and more service providers are offering VoIP services as opposed to the more traditional CDMA or GSM technology. This has led to more players entering the market which, in turn, creates more competitive price plans. In addition, all of the providers are creating bundled packages offering as many services as possible at lower prices.

I mentioned that business of all sizes are already beginning to take advantage of what VoIP has to offer, both in terms of flexibility and functionality and the fact that it is a cost saving solution, however, on the consumer side, there seems to be a low public acceptance of VoIP services. I’m sure that as the price of long distance and international calls continues to increase, consumers will find that the solution lies in VoIP.
