The drumbeat for adding Web Real-time Communication (WebRTC) in enterprises continues to get louder.  It is clear, particularly for companies looking at creating better customer experiences by giving customers easy-to-use omnichannel interactive access to customer care and sales people, that WebRTC is or should be part of their future.

However, in many ways we are still on the on ramp of the learning curve of WebRTC’s power and application.  Developer attention has become intense.  Yet, there remain some practical considerations for IT professionals looking to make WebRTC support a foundational part of their toolkit. As has been characterized by many, we are still in the maturation phase of WebRTC implementation, and there are as many questions as there are answers.

The good news is for those seeking to add WebRTC capabilities a vital piece for easy the implementation issues is already available.  It is the Session Border Controller (SBC). Despite the growing complexity of being able to support the explosion of devices of all types that have browsers and are becoming the platforms of choice for interactions of all types, SBCs can handle them.  Deployed at the edge of the network, SBCs perform several valuable functions for ensuring real-time communications multiple media interaction can be conducted safely and with reliable and compelling user experiences.   They not only can recognize and neutralize threats, but also bridge the technology gap between old and new.

For those looking to dip your toes in the WebRTC waters, and you should be, as SBC and networking solutions provider SONUS explains, there are three key factors IT departments need to be aware of:

  • WebRTC must integrate seamlessly into established SIP environments
  • Enterprises and service providers need to be judicious about network security to prevent attacks over WebRTC.
  • WebRTC will open up new revenue streams and means to improve customer satisfaction

If you wish to hear more about these factors and how WebRTC can open your business to new frontiers, securely and reliably, you are invited to participate in the webinar, Three Ways to Tame the Wilde West of WebRTC.  To be held April 21, 2015 11:00AM EDT/8:00 PDT, join me and David Tipping (News - Alert), Vice President and General Manager, SBC Business, SONUS as we explore in detail how SBCs can make your implementation of WebRTC a success.
