A holiday weekend may be approaching, but that didn't put a damper on the flow of news in session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking. No, this week carried on much like any other, and a substantial slug of news was the hallmark of the week in SIP trunking. So with our holiday weekend in hand, we catch our collective breath and take a quick look back before the barbecues begin in earnest with our Week in Review coverage!

First, we had a look at IntelePeer, who landed a key new appointment as a part of PlanetOne's 2015 Preferred Vendor Program. IntelePeer (News - Alert) joins such names as Earthlink, inContact and T-Mobile in this auspicious company, and reportedly landed its title on the strength of strong alliances and an impressive product line, including the CoreCloud SIP Trunking system (CCST). CCST allows companies to take advantage of cloud services without having to lose investment made in landline options, making for a better overall fit and less waste.

Next we got a look at some changes at Net2Phone, as the company added India to its roster of unlimited international calling destinations. With Canada and Mexico on hand, as well as a good portion of Europe, adding India to the list should prove to be very useful considering how much business is done in the country. Several different platforms of interoperability also help matters, and make Net2Phone a strong option for business users, strengthened still further by the new addition.

A new move from Thing5 made the next piece of news, as the company acquired the various assets of HTS, a guest Internet service provider.

Thing5 was already well-known as a provider of IP phone services for the hospitality industry, and HTS' combined total of over 100 deployments in hotels throughout the United States should ultimately only add to that reputation.

Then, we had a look at rise of the carrier IP telephony market, as a study from the Dell (News - Alert)'Oro Group revealed that the parts of the market that were based in software accounted for the biggest slice of market revenues. Software-based portions like session border controllers (SBCs), voice application servers (VAS) and IMS core systems comprised a combined total of over 60 percent of the market's total revenues. This led Dell'Oro Group vice president Chris DePuy to suggest that the “end of the hardware era” was nearly in play.

Finally, we had a look at TalkTalk Business' latest move, acquiring tIPicall, a company focused on SIP networks. With tIPicall in TalkTalk Business' roster, TalkTalk Business could offer up SIP trunking services as part of its lineup. This made particular sense given that TalkTalk Business focuses on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) calling. But, when TalkTalk Business' Charles Bligh offered up the idea that SIP might ultimately replace the landline by 2020; that put a whole new spin on things.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, so with that, go forth and enjoy your holiday weekend! Our global online community will stay vigilant in the meantime for all the latest news in the field, so be sure to join us back next week for all the latest news, and every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
