A startup in India, Quiq Infotech, has announced the release of a new mobile app called Ringr that offers high voice quality over low bandwidth connections.

“We are seeking to change the way VoIP applications are viewed in India, as the digital call quality they offer would be preferable to regular calls for most users. By removing the bandwidth hurdle, we intend to help more people convert to VoIP calls,” Quiq Infotech CEO Ashok Mani said.

The company has created its own compression technology dubbed Quiqz to encode a high-quality voice signal into a stream that only requires 400 kilobytes of data per minute over 3G networks. Quiq Infotech said that this is half than the bandwidth that WhatsApp and Skype (News - Alert) use over mobile networks.

Mobile connections can be fickle, even under the best of circumstances, and Quiq has designed the service to work even under spotty connections.

To entice users to sign up, the company will offer them vouchers for its partners, Paytm, Woohoo. Users access the rewards by watching videos and taking surveys on the Ringr Rewards Vault. They’ll also get more minutes simply by calling other people.

The company’s monetization model is unique for this kind of VoIP service. While Skype already provides free calling, even over mobile devices, Ringr offers a reward system. The more users makes calls, the more free stuff they get. The offers also offset any other data fees the user might incur, even when using VoIP.

With most of the Ringr’s uses being free, Quiq Infotech depends on advertising for the app’s monetization.

Ringr is tailored to the Indian market. It’s designed to offer call quality over slower mobile lines and its free usage makes it even more affordable to most of the population. It’s already available in the Google (News - Alert) Play store.
