CounterPath (News - Alert), a provider of Over-The-Top (OTT) has announced that a major European carrier has selected CounterPath's Bria Mobile Edition softphones.

"We are excited to partner with our new customer, an innovative carrier offering secure communications services to its customers," said Terry Meredith, vice president of EMEA Sales at CounterPath. "Their business strategy aligns with current trends as corporations and governments are increasingly insulating themselves against third-party threats that could damage their brands or cause real losses in terms of missed deals or stolen intellectual property.”

The unnamed carrier has purchased $800,000 worth of software and services that it will deliver to its customers.

This seems like a major shift in strategy for carriers, who have been fighting OTT services like Skype (News - Alert). CounterPath specifically courts carriers with the promise that repurposing an existing solution is faster and cheaper than trying to implement new features on their own. By offering new features, CounterPath claims that carriers can ultimately increase customer loyalty more than they could by staying in house.

In the case of the carrier, the softphones are intended to make their networks more secure as more people adopt mobile devices under BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policies. Using a softphone instead of the regular cellular connection makes it possible to separate business communications from personal ones.

Using a VoIP softphone app to call a business makes it less susceptible to fraud and hacking, which is becoming a major problem for business VoIP networks. Forrester (News - Alert) Research estimates the total amount lost to these kinds of attacks to exceed $40 million. While tech companies and carriers are locked in a (usually losing) arms race with hackers, they seem to find that the cost of adopting an OTT solution is less than the cost of lost data and damaged reputations.

CounterPath’s Bria softphone applications are available for iPhone, Android (News - Alert) and BlackBerry.
