The session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking market made some serious moves this week, and everywhere you looked, something was emerging, changing, or just plain old demonstrating the sheer power this market had. A market this purely volatile meant plenty of developments, and now that we've got a weekend on hand, we can take a better look at the biggest events to hit the week. That's just what we'll do right now with our Week in Review coverage!

First came news from Digium (News - Alert), who announced the new Switchvox Cloud 6.0 Communications system. A low-cost metered version, starting just $12.99 per user per month, gives smaller-scale operations, or those that have varying levels of calls due to things like seasonal issues, access to the array of options Switchvox (News - Alert) Cloud can offer. It offers up the Switchboard interface to provide call information at a glance, as well as calling options, call recording mechanisms, and more.

Next, we had an unusual look at an old friend in the technology game: voicemail. More specifically, the projections from Argyle Data CEO Tom Ryan suggest that voicemail is on its way out. With the growth of mobile devices--particularly smartphones--the need for voicemail is falling off. While it's still in use, and likely will be for some time on at least some level, a large number of users are dropping this formerly indispensable service.

Star2Star came in next, landing an award from Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) as a Top 10 Provider in its North American Hosted Telephony and UCC report. Star2Star reportedly landed the designation as a result of its product line, which included not only the standard services, but things like dial tones and direct inward dial (DID) systems. The report also offered up some mention of other trends currently in play in the unified communications (UC) marketplace, like how most IP providers allow customers to rent or lease the phones needed for the service.

Then, we featured the key to unlocking the North American market for IP and UCC systems. This huge market, with plenty of users and a hefty slug of potential profitability waiting to go, is focused on the overall product more than anything else. A Frost & Sullivan report showed that much of the growth in IP and UCC systems will come from the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market, which is predominantly concerned here with getting what it pays for, and then some. Flexibility and adaptability will be vital here, as well as top-notch service, consultative approaches mixed in with automated tools, and more.

Finally, we featured a new development from ShoreTel, who brought in a new senior vice president for product in the form of Eugenia Corrales. Corrales has previously been seen with a variety of different Silicon Valley firms, developing a body of experience going back over 25 years. Previously seen at Cisco (News - Alert) and HP, among others, Corrales' experience joins several other factors to produce a positive aggregation of ratings for the firm, with six out of eight calling the firm “outperforming” or better.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, and it was a big week by most any standard. The fundamentals of the market are changing, and we're seeing old standards fall away as new standards step in. Our global online community was right in the thick of it, bringing back all the best in news. So be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest, and every weekend for our Week in Review coverage!
