Big news afoot this week in session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking, everybody, which means we've got a lot of ground to cover with this week's Week in Review coverage. There were new clients, new acquisitions, and plenty more to run down, so now that we've got a weekend on hand, settle in and grab that second cup of coffee with both hands because it's time to get caught up and get us at the top of our game for next week!

First, we had word about Noble Systems, which found itself with a new client in Williams & Fudge. Williams and Fudge specializes in student loan recovery, a market currently valued somewhere around $1.2 trillion. Noble Systems (News - Alert) will be stepping in to improve Williams & Fudge's student loan management systems as well as its receivables recovery process via Noble Systems' customer interaction management (CIM) system, a blended system allowing for contact by Web, voice, or email.

Next came a fairly big surprise as Onvoy LLC was set to buy Broadvox (News - Alert) LLC, in a deal valued at an undisclosed sum. With the purchase of Broadvox comes a major new status for Onvoy, as the company will become the third largest competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) based on the overall rate center coverage. The company will have 5,000 rate centers in place, and thus have access to more than eight in every 10 households in the United States. Onvoy will also be able to offer a variety of services, including cable television, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service and wireless options, among others.

Cambium brought in the next bit of news, with a new world record in the longest network link. The link runs 153 land-miles, extending from Pike's Peak in Colorado to Cheyenne, Wyoming. The link's length was the biggest news, but what it transmitted was every bit as noteworthy. The link allowed for transmission of not only high-definition video, but also VoIP transmission.

Then we had a look at the relationship between Patton Electronics and BroadSoft (News - Alert), as recent completion of testing has yielded a new solution in the SmartNode Enterprise Session Border Controller (E-SBC), and has been tested to be interoperable with the BroadSoft BroadWorks platform. The combined effort gives Patton (News - Alert)'s system a lot of room to run in the market thanks to this, but throwing in the standard telephony interfaces should prove the icing on the cake.

Finally we had a look at Vertical Communications' new software for Wave IP, a telephony system geared toward the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market. Wave IP 5.0 has a particular focus on three major areas, including reducing the total cost of ownership, adding new applications and features, and making accommodations for a wider array of endpoints in the system. There's even a new cloud-based service called Vertical Updates geared toward making sure Wave IP customers have the very latest in software versions.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, and what a week it was. There was no shortage of exciting events going on here, and our global online community was right at the heart of it all, bringing back the best in news for us. So be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest, and every weekend as well for our Week in Review coverage!
