What a week it was in session initiation protocol (SIP) trunking! We had all manner of news as updates and new products took center stage, and even the upcoming elections factored in as part of the rapid growth that we've seen in this market over the last several months. But with all that news afoot, what really mattered in this week that was? That's just the question we'll answer right now with our Week in Review coverage, so settle in, put on another cup of coffee—throw in a donut if you like, we won't tell—and let's check out the biggest news of the week.

First we had a look at a new offering from Verizon (News - Alert), the Wireless Connected VoIP system. Part of Verizon's Enterprise Solutions division, Wireless Connected VoIP brings the power of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) to a wider variety of users, meaning that any call that reaches a Verizon Wireless (News - Alert) phone suddenly no longer experiences long distance charges. It's automatically available to Verizon's VoIP IP Enterprise Routing (VIPER) customers, and savings can start fairly rapidly.

Next came a slew of updates from CounterPath, as the company updated both the Bria and the Stretto systems for both desktop and mobile operations. The new Bria 4.2 for Windows and Mac, and the Bria 3.4 for iOS and Android (News - Alert), are both softphone clients that offer a range of options, including instant messaging, video calling, and VoIP service. Stretto's new Sync tool, meanwhile, can gather a history's worth of instant messages and make same available at any time for other users.

FirstLight Fiber brought in the next bit of news, expanding its credit line with help from GE Capital and Webster Bank. The newly-expanded credit line was set to bring the opportunity to step up investment in large-scale projects, allowing FirstLight Fiber to focus on selling fiber and Internet services throughout a large portion of New England, including New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine as well as upstate New York. The company can provide SIP trunking, virtual private branch exchange (PBX (News - Alert)) and data center colocation as well.

Then, WOW! Business announced a new agreement with VentureGroup Enterprises, more specifically, a Master Agent agreement that would make for a better collaborative environment between carriers and the agents of telecom firms. VentureGroup offers an automated back-end system along with assorted other processes that help improve the overall environment. WOW!, meanwhile, offers a complete set of IP-based network services, making the two an excellent combination.

Finally, pascom completed a new set of interoperability tests with SIP Trunk Plus, who handles SIP services in the U.K. More specifically, pascom completed interoperability tests for its mobydick system, and with the completed tests, mobydick users will be able to bring in the range of SIP Trunk Plus features like call recording for desktop and mobile as well as fraud mitigation tools, opening up a whole new range of options.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, and there was no shortage of news to go around. Clearly, our global online community performed an exemplary job in recovering news and keeping us all up to date.
