Session initiation protocol news is generally pretty well represented, but this week there was just so much happening in the space. It's a good problem to have, but still, it poses a question: how do we figure out what's useful about all this news and put it to work where we are? That's a question we'll answer right now, just as we do every weekend, with our Week in Review coverage!

First, a happy bit of news as VirtualPBX took home a 2015 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award. This isn't the first time that VirtualPBX has taken such a prize, and the company credits an ongoing commitment to customers as the biggest reason for its success. VirtualPBX previously won for its Softphone app, and this year, garnered the award for innovation in Internet protocol (IP) communications.

Next we had a look at the combined effort of Mutualink and IP Access International, who made a good thing even better when it came to disaster planning. The effort takes Mutualink's Interoperable Response and Preparedness Platform (IRAPP) network and brings it to IP Access (News - Alert) International's breed of satellite connectivity. That in turn gives IRAPP the capability to operate just about anywhere, under just about any conditions, particularly those commonly seen in the midst of disasters.

Ingate Systems' President, Steven Johnson (News - Alert), then stepped in with a highly useful piece of tech news: a closer look at what technical considerations should be part of the package when looking at SIP trunking. Naturally, some were simple, like considering the quality of the available Internet connection and whether a separate network might be useful. Others, however, were more easily overlooked, like the quality of network components to handle the throughput, the overall importance of voice in an organization, and even if the private branch exchange (PBX (News - Alert)) should be used with a public or private IP address.

Then, Broadvoice stepped in as a new reseller of the Five9 Virtual Contact Center platform. Five9 (News - Alert) solutions offer a wide range of capabilities, offering support for inbound and outbound contact centers alike, as well as those which turn to blended solutions. That range of options is backed up with an array of tools ranging from interactive voice response (IVR) systems to automatic call distribution options and more besides. Since Broadvoice is a hosted voice provider, it makes a particular sense for it to offer a virtual contact center tool like Five9 offers.

Finally, word arrived from Uniden (News - Alert) about its new Uniden Office Express 1600, the only system around that can handle both corded and cordless VoIP phones, as well as support VoIP lines alongside traditional lines. The line also boasts integrated Wi-Fi and firewall capability as well as a simple plug-and-play setup that helps ensure easy starts. It's geared toward companies with between two and 50 employees, and not only delivers the kind of power demanded but also the accessibility needed to make the power work. Uniden projects savings of 60 percent, on average, when compared to standard phone systems.

That was the week that was in SIP trunking, and there was plenty of news in the field this week. It was clear our global online community pulled out all the stops in offering up the best news that could be had. So be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest, and every weekend as well for our Week in Review coverage!
