The business world is increasingly more dependent on communications technology and the quickening proliferation of 3G/4G and fiber optic networks is supporting that, but the shipping industry has been somewhat left behind due to the isolating nature of the open seas. Orange (News - Alert) Business Service is addressing that fact with Maritime Connect, an integrated solutions platform that provides shipping fleets with full connectivity and communications functionality.

Maritime Connect delivers voice, VoIP, data and Internet in a single solution regardless of the type of satellite communications system used and allows a fleet to be seamlessly integrated into the corporate network. Developed specifically for limited bandwidth situations and challenging weather conditions, the solution includes comprehensive bandwidth management and optimization features to ensure proper operation while simultaneously cutting communication costs.

“Orange Business Services (News - Alert) is uniquely positioned in the maritime market because we are able to integrate many different technologies and networks, both onshore and offshore,” said Michel Verbist, Head Business Development Satellite Solutions at Orange Business Services. “With the end-to-end integration and satellite connectivity offered by Maritime Connect, vessels on the high seas are now as well connected as terrestrial offices. This enables new ways of working right across the shipping industry.”

Maritime Connect brings a wealth of opportunities to shipping crews through integration into the corporate network, such as secure access to enterprise applications and optimized route planning tools. Companies can more easily communicate with their fleet and perform remote tracking and monitoring, while the crews themselves can enjoy near-constant connectivity with the outside world and suffer from isolation no longer. Telemedicine, an increasingly popular trend on land, can now be extended to people at sea so they’re afforded the best care possible given the situation.

There are three tiers of the Maritime Connect solution, with the most basic version including access to basic communications services such as IP routing, link switching, quality of service (QoS) and server hosting for onboard applications. The middle tier adds security licenses, WAN optimization and user accounting while the highest one provides onboard Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity for nearshore operations, ensuring maximum connectivity for the ship’s crew.
