Telecommunications remains a growing and vibrant ecosystem, rapidly expanding across a broad array of products, technologies and services companies. According to Plunkett Research, U.S. telecom industry spending is projected to reach $1.4 Trillion (News - Alert) USD in 2015 and global telecom spending will reach $5.6 Trillion USD.

While these figures certainly represent a lot of business out there for the taking, wholesalers will need to find new ways to gain business advantages over their competitors in an increasingly complex market. In Europe, for example, additional adjustments to roaming charges and other regulations are expected to further expand, and complicate, the telecom business. For carriers, these regulatory developments will offer opportunities to improve roaming monetization through the launch of enhanced services for specific customer types. This will once again stimulate usage, as consumers come to expect a higher-quality user experience relevant to their needs. With market consolidation continuing, and with so many dynamic factors in play, wholesale providers will need to have a compelling offer across a range of services, including voice and Voice over IP (VoIP), in order to succeed.

Worldwide, the VoIP service market reached nearly $70 Billion USD in 2014, a three percent increase from the prior year fueled largely by growth in business VoIP services, according to Infonetics (News - Alert) Research. Business voice services are the driving force within the VoIP services market, as the move to IP positively affects cloud, trunking and managed services across all business segments. Larger enterprises, in particular, continue to evaluate cloud-based communications while also migrating to (Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert)) SIP trunking for premises-based deployments. Comprising 38 percent of overall VoIP services sales, business VoIP services revenue grew 9.7 percent in 2014 over 2013, the latest figures available.

Recognizing there is business in wholesale telecom and VoIP is one thing, of course, but managing it presents a far more complex challenge. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is at the core of any enterprise, but Telecom Resource Management, a solution that empowers a business to completely focus on the customer lifecycle rather than sales process, is what’s sorely needed for companies to increase revenue and achieve sustained growth. Such a solution would not only facilitate customer lead generation, acquisition, conversion, retention, and the Holy Grail of business, loyalty; but also be specific to the byzantine terms and conditions of agreements, tariffs, discounts, invoicing, payment schedule and more, with respect to carriers.

Recently, Panamax Inc., a leading technology company, made enhancements to the CRM module of its interconnect billing solution known as BillCall, a carrier management tool for telecom operators that provides accurate billing, pricing, routing and financial management information, which is compatible with Class-4 switches, as well as Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) and In-Line Disconnect (ILD) switches, and features origination, termination and transit traffic billing, as well as dynamic routing capabilities.

While this is just one application to assist telecom operators to manage their wholesale and VoIP businesses, progressive companies endeavoring to penetrate new markets and exploit new growth opportunities will embrace such innovative technologies as the telecom sector becomes ever more complex and competitive in the years to come.
