The SIP Forum and the IPv6 Forum have teamed-up to drive the deployment and interoperability of session initiation protocol and IPv6 related technologies and services.
IPv6 is a next generation Internet protocol designed to replace and improve upon IPv4 which serves as the fundamental transportation layer protocol for today’s Internet. The new Internet protocol comes with a number of enhanced features and functionality designed to improve the security of IP traffic and provide support for real-time communications.
IPv6 syncs seamlessly with SIP in the application layer, which serves as next generation signalling protocol for handling voice over Internet protocol VoIP and multimedia communications over IP networks.
Richard Shockey (News - Alert), chairman of the board for SIP Forum, said that by coming together, “our two organizations can help move the industry forward and develop the foundation to fuel a new generation of communications innovation.”
The terms of the partnership calls on both the organizations to plan and collaborate on a number of initiatives to educate and co-promote the deployment and integration of these two next-generation protocols throughout the industry.
The SIP Forum (News - Alert) is an IP communications industry association that engages in numerous activities that promote and advance SIP-based technology. Shockey said that the SIP Forum shares a similar mission and vision as the IPv6 Forum for the broad interoperability and adoption of open standards, next generation Internet-based technologies and services.
In the next few months, the leadership of SIP Forum and IPv6 Forum are expected to work together to formulate a joint program calendar for their combined membership. The joint program calendar may include co- marketing and industry events, technology interoperability initiatives and technical working group collaboration.
The IPv6 Forum is a world-wide consortium of Internet service vendors, National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) and international ISPs, with a clear mission to promote IPv6.
Calling SIP and IPv6 two “fundamental Internet plumbing pieces” of the future Internet, Latif Ladid, president of IPv6 Forum and Emeritus Trustee Internet Society, said that this partnership will allow both the organizations to leverage their combined worldwide user base to drive the right knowledge and best practices to the Internet community at large.
Ladid expects that this union will smooth the adoption of these two technologies and spur Internet growth and solid sustainability.
