The SIP Forum, an IP communications industry association that promotes and advances 'Session Initiation Protocol' (News - Alert) or 'SIP' based technology through various activities including development of industry recommendations, the SIPit interoperability and testing events, special interoperability workshops, educational seminars, and general promotion of SIP in the industry, has announced to declare the results of its latest SIP Interoperability Testing event, known as 'SIPit (News - Alert) 26'.

The interoperability testing event was held in Kista, Sweden during May 17-21, 2010, and was particularly beneficial for SIP application developers, service providers, and IP communications equipment manufacturers. During the five day long testing event, latest innovations made in SIP-based technology were showcased to boost the deployment of SIP-based consumer and enterprise applications within fixed and mobile IP network topologies.
Edvina and TANDBERG jointly hosted 'SIPit 26', and Intertex (News - Alert) and Ingate jointly sponsored it along with the IPv6 Forum serving as an association sponsor, which is a global consortium of Internet service vendors, 'National Research & Education Networks' or 'NRENs' and international ISPs aiming at promoting IPv6 by improving market and user awareness and creating a quality and secure Next Generation Internet.
28 companies attended 'SIPit 26', who benefitted from the vital 'real-world' deployment data that was gathered from the 42 SIP implementations conducted during the week, wherein the SIP interworking was tested within various simulated, live IP network conditions and settings.
It was noted in the event that the number of 'Secure Real-time Transport Protocol' or 'SRTP' and TLS implementations for secure SIP interworking had considerably increased while the number of IPv6 implementations had also continuously grown, when compared to previous events.
In the words of Robert Sparks, chairman of the SIP Forum's (News - Alert) Test Event Working Group and organizer of SIPit 26, as SIP communications become more widely prevalent, securing SIP at both the application and media layers through SRTP and TLS is critical. Sparks continued that other interesting developments were the growth of IPv6 and a large number of participants testing network edge-specific scenarios with ICE and TURN implementations.
According to Marc Robins (News - Alert), President & Managing Director at SIP Forum, SIPit events bring together a diverse array of stakeholders from the global telecom community including SIP application developers, IP communications equipment manufacturers, and service providers. Robins noted that the event provides them with an opportunity to glean valuable technical data about new SIP specifications and implementations important to their business, in a neutral setting.
In May 2010, the SIP Forum entered a partnership with the i3 Forum to help spur the interoperability of SIP-based carrier services, including 'Fax-over-Internet-Protocol' or 'FoIP' interoperability on a global basis.
